Monday will mark the beginning of Social Media Week 2010. “Social Media Week conferences take place simultaneously in multiple cities around the world. The aim of each event is to advance the use and understanding of social media in the corporate, public and non-profit sectors.

The second annual conference will take place between February 1st – 5th, 2010 simultaneously in New York City, Berlin, London, San Francisco, Toronto and São Paulo. The five day conference will explore the profound impact that social media has on culture, business communications and society at large.” – socialmediaweek.org

Atlanta, GA is not listed among the host cities, though some would like to see this change in the future. Some of the most active and profound individuals in the social media space call Georgia home. One of Atlanta’s own, and a respected social media pioneer himself, is Bert Dumars.

Bert is VP of E-Business and Interactive Marketing/Social Media Explorer at Newell Rubbermaid, and he’s taken the initiative to gather together some of Atlanta’s social media talent to discuss what events and conferences might help to put Atlanta on the map for Social Media Week 2011.

Bert didn’t invite everyone to a conference or a boardroom, he contacted a well loved local venue, Fuego Mundo, and he organized a Tweetup! How can you not love this guy? Bert tweeted about the event and asked that others do the same. After only a few days the RSVP list contains a “yes” from over seventy people. Included are some of Atlanta’s finest social media minds.

If you are attending, it might be a good idea to scribble some 2011 event and conference ideas down on paper BEFORE the event. I’m quite sure that a very good time will be had by all, but Bert did ask for ideas! If you have some thoughts already, please leave me a comment here, I’ll do my best to make sure that Bert sees them. (*Note 12/31/10 He’s aware of the post and will see your comments)

I’m a huge fan of the Tweetup idea in general, and again, I encourage everyone to get out and network in real life (IRL) to meet and interact with new people. If you are in the Atlanta area and want to attend this Tweetup, there’s still time. You can RSVP and find more details on the Meetup page. I hope to see you there!
