Auld Lang Syne – “old long since”, and perhaps even more appropriately – “days gone by”. For the first time in my life, I actually looked up the definition. So many things I still take for granted or don’t understand…sheesh.
I’m extremely excited about the coming year, and yet I can’t help but wax a bit somber as we move into the unknown…I like what I’ve known this past year, haven’t you? Sure, I resolve to put my best foot forward and meet the New Year head-on. Still I ponder – what of all my resolve from last year? How to meet with the things I didn’t become and the things I didn’t even begin to accomplish? Am I allowed to wrap all of this into a midnight rendition of an old song and just forget about it? Would I even want to?
You know what I like about last year? It’s that I don’t have as many unanswered questions about it as I do about this coming year! I can draw you a picture of last year, I sure can…in fact I have one! It’s more of a diagram, a chart really. I know that it’s a great thing to look ahead and make plans, and I do! It’s just that I find hindsight to be a great assistant in the making of these plans. I find it necessary though to add a dash each of “forgive, forget, and forge ahead” to the recipe here.
Included along with all of the highlights on my chart are all of the things I thought were important to me and my business at this time last year. Many of these I can indeed strike through and NOT include in my plans for this year. Some were too lofty, while others were just plain ridiculous. I’m actually not sure what I was thinking about some of this stuff. Embarrassed as I am, I can’t help but to set out this year with a more realistic set of goals and objectives.
I can see some areas where I’ve made great headway and enjoyed some success. I’m taking half of today to toast and congratulate myself for these! As much as I’d like to change my spots right now, I think I’m going to keep and repeat some of the things from last year that simply made me happy…even if they didn’t make me rich and famous.
